Health workers don personal protective equipment (PPE) as they prepare for the burial of a Covid-19 patient who lost the battle against the coronavirus in Gombak, Selangor. 

There are strict procedures in the handling of victims who die of Covid-19 to prevent the spread of the contagious and deadly disease. 

The country is experiencing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases resulting in bed shortages in intensive care units (ICU) as many Klang Valley hospitals exceed their capacity to care for critical patients. 

Daily Covid-19 deaths have also increased with a total of 50 fatalities reported on May 22, bringing the death toll to 2,199.

The Health Ministry reported 6,976 new cases on May 23, a new record high in infections for Malaysia since the start of the pandemic.
