SIRIM has marked yet another milestone with the recently launched SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem, a forward-thinking initiative designed to support and accelerate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices among Malaysian industries.
This comprehensive ecosystem is positioned to empower businesses to meet sustainability goals and contribute meaningfully to national and global environmental objectives.
The SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem provides Malaysian companies with a comprehensive suite of ESG support services through SIRIM’s subsidiaries and Business Units: SIRIM QAS International, SIRIM Academy and SIRIM IR.
Among the subsidiaries, SIRIM QAS International plays a vital role in the Ecosystem, offering 46 schemes aligned with ESG principles to support Malaysian industries in achieving sustainability goals. Key certifications include ISO 50001 for Energy Management System, ISO 37001 for Anti-Bribery Management System and ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management System.
The launch of the holistic ecosystem for ESG in Malaysia was organised in conjunction with Majlis SIRIM Industri 2024 on 7 November 2024. The event was graced by Deputy Secretary-General of Investment, Trade and Industry (Investment & Management), Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil.
As government, investors, consumers and businesses increasingly prioritise ESG principles, SIRIM developed this comprehensive framework to help Malaysian organisations meet both local and global sustainability standards. SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem addresses environmental concerns, such as carbon emissions and resource efficiency, as well as social responsibility, ethical governance and transparency, aligning closely with national goals agenda.
SIRIM QAS also provides specialised certifications like the Eco-Labelling Scheme for environmentally friendly products, Social Responsibility Certification (IQNet SR10), Social Accountability (SIRIM 50), ISO 14067 for Product Carbon Footprint, RSPO Supply Chain Certificaion for sustainable palm oil practices, and ISO 37301 for Compliance Management System. Central to these offerings is the new SIRIM 55:2023 ESG Management System, designed to empower businesses to implement, measure, and enhance ESG practices.
Meanwhile, SIRIM Academy enhances ESG capacity building by providing specialised training and consultancy. Ket offerings include consultancy services in Gap Analysis, ESG Framework Development and ESG Management System Documentation. The Academy also provides certification programmes for Certified Sustainability Professional, Certified ESG Management System Professional, and Certified ESG Practitioner.
As a recognised GRI Certified Training Partner, it offers certified courses in sustainable reporting, alongside public and in-house training for tailored ESG development. Meanwhile, SIRIM IR supports businesses with technical expertise in carbon accounting, energy audits, life cycle assessment, environmental assessment and monitoring, waste characterisation and other services to help companies assess and reduce their carbon footprints.
Bahria said this embodies SIRIM’s commitment to supporting Malaysian industries as they integrate ESG principles into their operations, whereby ESG is no longer an option but a necessity for businesses to remain relevant in today’s evolving landscape.
“I would like to commend SIRIM for consistently contributing to the development of our industry, notably in the areas of research, technology and quality. It has proven to be an invaluable partner, contributing to the enhancement of industry players’ capabilities. I urge the industries to leverage on SIRIM’s expertise to realise their ESG aspirations,” she said.
SIRIM Berhad Chairman Datuk Ir (Dr) Khairol Anuar Mohamad Tawi said the SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem acts as a pivotal solution in positioning Malaysia as a leader in sustainable and responsible practices.
“This ecosystem isn’t just about compliance, it is about enabling our industries to thrive on a global scale by embracing sustainable growth and innovation. Through rigorous certification, training and advanced testing capabilities, we are empowering companies with a ‘passport for prosperity’, enabling them to thrive in a market that values ESG integrity and competitiveness. By investing in this ecosystem, we are preparing our industries to succeed in the global market and to proudly uphold Malaysia’s place on the World Competitive Index,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Majlis SIRIM Industri, themed “ESG: Driving 50 years of change” this year, is an annual event aimed at strengthening relationships and collaboration between SIRIM, the industry and government agencies, as well as recognising organisations and companies that received certifications from SIRIM QAS International in 2023, with a special focus on ESG clients in 2024.
