'Reform' govt hinders anti-graft rally
The pro-reform and anti-graft government is hindering an anti-graft rally set to be held this Saturday.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail defended police demanding that organisers get permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Sogo, saying that they are the owners of Dataran Merdeka and outside grounds of Sogo mall.
He said this is to comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Saifuddin and others in government, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, rallied at Dataran Merdeka before, including during the May 2014 anti-GST rally.
Police have warned the public against participating in this Saturday's protest.
HIGHLIGHTS
Najib denies, denies, denies
Najib Abdul Razak made a slew of denials during his 1MDB corruption trial on Monday and Tuesday.
He denied an auditor’s assertion that the former premier had intimidated them into signing off on 1MDB's accounts.
He denied pressuring 1MDB to enter a joint venture with Petrosaudi International.
He denied that former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was essentially fired over plans to file charges against him.
He also denied that a deputy public prosecutor - Dzulkifli Ahmad - tipping him off about MACC's probe into 1MDB was interference.
HIGHLIGHTS
No more free toll for holidays
The government will no longer be giving out toll-free periods to coincide with major holidays.
Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government will be announcing an alternative form of target subsidies soon.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said toll-free days cost the government RM35 million per day, which is offset by extending toll concessions.
