Multi-million A to B syndicate
Malaysiakini has uncovered yet another syndicate making millions from exploiting migrant workers.
This syndicate obtains quotas for migrant workers they don’t need and then rent or sells the workers to a third-party company.
Malaysiakini learned that this syndicate began its activities in 1996 and was purportedly unstoppable with the help of corrupt law enforcement officers.
Last year, we uncovered a different syndicate running the same kind of operation.
Despite the government's pledge to conduct a full investigation, the latest expose shows that such exploitation is still active.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim and Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution had in January imposed a new rule that employers who bring in migrant workers need to pay them even if there was no work available.

Daim’s widow challenges govt
The widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin has challenged the government to continue with the asset-disclosure criminal court case against the deceased.
Na’imah Abdul Khalid said it was Daim’s wish that the court case proceed until it is concluded, saying that her late husband was confident he would be acquitted.
She added that she would not allow Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to hide behind Daim’s death to evade responsibility over “repeated public slander” against the tycoon.
HIGHLIGHTS
Bung’s acquittal quashed
Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin and his wife Zizie Izette Abdul Samad's acquittal in an RM2.8 million corruption case was nullified by the Court of Appeal.
The Sessions Court had initially ordered the couple to enter their defence before a High Court allowed their bid to quash the defence order.
The Court of Appeal ruled that the High Court erred because prima facie verdicts cannot be revised.
With this, Bung and Zizie must enter their defence at the Sessions Court.
