Announcement on Malaysiakini's restructuring plan

To ensure Malaysiakini’s long-term stability and success, we are initiating a restructuring that will affect several employees after careful deliberation.

We have diligently worked to minimise job losses; however, several reductions and the restructuring of certain functions are inevitable.

This is after we have exhausted all possible means of reducing losses during a difficult time for news media worldwide.

News outlets in many places have had to lay off staff or close down in the last few years. Malaysiakini is one of the latest players to respond to this disruption.

“This is a difficult time for everyone at Malaysiakini, especially those who are directly affected. We are committed to supporting them as much as we can. Malaysiakini is no stranger to adversity and we have survived many a storm thanks to the unwavering support of our subscribers,” RK Anand, the executive editor of Malaysiakini said.

Tham Seen Hau, the head of operations, added, “This restructuring is vital to ensure we remain resilient and continue to focus on our core mission to bring exclusive stories with depth that matter to the country.”

What we want you to know:

Is Malaysiakini closing down?

No. We have experienced many ups and downs in the last 25 years. Our office has been raided multiple times, and we have had to close down different units and subsidiaries over the years. This restructuring is one of the exercises to ensure our sustainability. We are confident we can continue to serve Malaysia.

How many people are affected?

The restructuring process is ongoing. We are recommending some staff to apply for openings at our sister company FG Media. Several others will be let go.

How will Malaysiakini’s content be affected?

With reduced resources, we have to be more selective in the stories we do. We have always been very proud of the award-winning breaking news, exclusive stories, in-depth analyses, and interactive reports we produce. We will continue to focus on these core areas to bring news and views that matter.

How can we help Malaysiakini?

Reader income keeps us financially and editorially independent. Subscribe or donate to keep us sustainable.
