Covid-19 (April 18): 7,140 new cases, 16 new fatalities

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 7,140 new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 4,396,165.

Active cases stood at 96,602, down 43.5 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Selangor (5,020)
Kuala Lumpur (415)
Negeri Sembilan (290)
Perak (287)
Terengganu (239)
Johor (214)
Penang (166)
Kedah (133)
Malacca (94)
Sarawak (92)
Pahang (64)
Sabah (58)
Kelantan (40)
Putrajaya (11)
Perlis (10)
Labuan (7)

Another 16 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which four were declared as “brought in dead”.

Over the past week, an average of 18 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 37, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,437 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 454 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 deaths last month and 770 deaths in February.

The state with the highest deaths was Selangor (5), Johor (3), Kedah (2), Penang (2), Terengganu (2), Perak (1) and Sarawak (1).

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,070 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

There are 2,308 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised, of which 110 are in intensive care.

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (153) followed by Johor (101) and Sabah (75).
