Covid-19 (March 23): 22,491 new cases, 65 more deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 22,491 new daily Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 4,054,926.

Active cases currently stood at 248,864, down 20.8 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Selangor (10,240)

Kuala Lumpur (1,991)

Penang (1,299)

Sarawak (1,252)

Kedah (1,240)

Perak (1,213)

Negeri Sembilan (1,116)

Johor (1,031)

Pahang (892)

Malacca (573)

Kelantan (516)

Terengganu (492)

Sabah (388)

Perlis (106)

Labuan (73)

Putrajaya (69)

Another 65 deaths attributed to Covid-19 was reported yesterday, of which 15 was declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 71.6 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 73.7, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 34,600 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 1,851 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 771 deaths last month and 491 deaths in January.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,046 deaths per 1 million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

The state with the highest number of deaths was Selangor (12) followed by Perak (11), Johor (10), Malacca (5), Pahang (5), Kedah (4), Negeri Sembilan (3), Sabah (3), Sarawak (3), Kuala Lumpur (3), Penang (2), Kelantan (1), Perlis (1), Terengganu (1) and Labuan (1).

There are 6,051 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 332 are in intensive care.
