COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 5,828 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,426,050.

Notably, there were only two new clusters.

The fresh infections comprised 5,569 Malaysians (95.6 percent) and 259 non-citizens (4.4 percent).

They were surpassed by a total of 9,178 Covid-19 patients who recovered today. This is expected to help reduce the number of active cases.

  • Patients in ICU: 620
  • Intubated: 297

The number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 10.7 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 13.7 percent from a week ago.

Nationally, the number of hospital admissions in the last seven days have declined by 12.3 percent compared to the preceding week.

However, in Sarawak, hospitalisation is up 8 percent compared to the previous week, according to the CovidNow website.

Generally, new cases across the country are steadily decreasing as an R-naught of 0.87 was recorded yesterday. An R-naught of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

The only region with an R-naught of above 1.00 is Kuala Lumpur.

Beginning Oct 9, the Health Ministry will only publish the breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states yesterday (Oct 22), when 6,630 new cases were reported, is:

Selangor (1,322)
Sarawak (750)
Sabah (641)
Kelantan (589)
Johor (548)
