COVID-19 | The Health Ministry's Github data repository reported a total of 64 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 10), bringing the cumulative death toll to 27,329.
This is the lowest number of reported deaths in 98 days. On July 4, the number of fatalities reported was 63 deaths. Nevertheless, Malaysia is the worst-performing country in East Asia in the number of Covid-19 deaths per capita.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 21.9 percent or 14 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Kelantan recorded the highest number of new deaths at 14, making up 21.9 percent of the newly reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Selangor (11), Johor (9), Perak (7), Sabah (7), Kedah (5), Sarawak (3), Terengganu (3), Pahang (2), Malacca (1), Perlis (1) and Penang (1).
No new deaths were reported in Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
A total of 58 out of the 64 reported deaths or 90.6 percent happened in the last seven days.
The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.
An average of 250 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 92, indicating a downtrend.
To date, 1,121 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.
As of yesterday, there were 116,596 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 22.4 percent from the 150,318 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 51.9 percent from 242,165.
The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.
From the 7,373 new cases yesterday, a total of 334 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 142 (42.5 percent) were from community transmissions while 125 (37.4 percent) were from workplaces.
Another 48 (14.4 percent) were from clusters linked to high-risk groups such as old folks' homes.
The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to education institutions (15 - 4.5 percent), detention centres (3 - 0.9 percent) and religious events (1 - 0.3 percent).
Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This has changed.
Deaths statistics are now released after midnight along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.
