COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 17,672 new Covid-19 cases.
Selangor (4,316) recorded fresh infections below the 5,000 mark for the first time in 35 days.
However, it should be noted that the reported Covid-19 cases are lower on Sundays and Mondays as the figures are derived from slower data collection over the weekend.
The underreporting in Selangor today is significant, considering an unusual plummet in deaths within a single day.
Prior to today, the Covid-19 deaths in Selangor for the past seven days ranged between 65 to 101 with an average of 86. Today, the state only reported seven deaths.
Despite the weekend underreporting, Selangor has in recent weeks showed encouraging trends.
The number of people in quarantine centres in the state has steadily dropped over the past week, as has the number of people hospitalised for Covid-19.
Selangor's intensive care unit (ICU) bed use, however, is holding steady over the past week.
Overall, new case numbers in the Klang Valley - where 66.7 percent of the adult population (2010 census numbers) are fully vaccinated - have been steadily dropping since Aug 6.
While this augurs well for the most populated part of the country, other regions where the vaccination rate is not as high are seeing an uptrend in case counts and hospitalisations.
The new locally transmitted infections comprised 86.61 percent Malaysians and 13.39 percent non-citizens.
New recoveries of 19,053 outpaced fresh cases, helping to reduce the number of active cases for the first time in 60 days.
- Active cases: 260,700
- Patients in ICUs: 1,040
- Intubated: 502
