COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a record 11,618 new Covid-19 cases today, primarily driven by Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan.

The number of patients requiring intensive care dropped by a dramatic 9.6 percent compared to yesterday.

However, the number of active cases - Covid-19 positive patients who are either quarantining at home or are receiving treatment elsewhere - breached the 100,000 mark for the first time.

Selangor once again recorded over 5,000 cases, with 5,051 being its second-highest tally ever following yesterday's total of 5,263.

Kuala Lumpur set a record high of 1,749 new cases. Its previous record was 1,550 on July 6.

Negeri Sembilan's figure of 1,537 is also a new record.

Notably, new cases in Pahang (400) have been trending up and do not appear to meet the government's criteria to be in Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan.

As of yesterday, the R-naught figure for the country reached 1.61. The figure has been rising steadily after a low of 0.90 seen on June 12.

An R-naught figure of more than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is accelerating.

The only parts of the country with an R-naught of less than 1.00 are Sarawak, Labuan and Perlis.

Deaths

Another 118 people were reported to have died due to Covid-19 today, bringing the death toll to 6,503.

Selangor (46) reported the most deaths followed by Kuala Lumpur (18), Negeri Sembilan (16), Johor (13), Kedah (5), Sabah (4), Sarawak (4), Malacca (2), Kelantan (2), Labuan (2), Pahang (2), Perak (2), Terengganu (1) and Penang (1).

There were 10 victims who were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Clusters

Currently, 876 active Covid-19 clusters are being monitored by the authorities. Exactly a month ago, there were 774.

The Health Ministry today classified another 26 new clusters of which 15 involved workplaces.
