Covid-19 (May 13): 4,855 new cases, highest since January

COVID-19 | Malaysia recorded 4,855 new Covid-19 cases today, marking the fourth time the number of daily cases has exceeded 4,000 in the past week.

Today sees the highest number of cases since Jan 31 when 5,298 cases were reported.

Only 3,347 people were discharged today while the number of active cases continued to grow for the 37th consecutive day from 14,097 cases on April 7 to 41,582 cases today.

The number of patients in ICU or who require intubation also reached a record high today.

The previous record for ICU admissions was 469 cases yesterday while the previous record for the number of patients who required intubation was yesterday at 244.

This comes as intensive care units in many hospitals are full of Covid-19 patients, and regular wards are being repurposed for ICUs.

Deaths

There were 27 fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 1,788.

The new deaths were recorded in Selangor (8), Johor (5), Kelantan (3), Sarawak (2), Penang (2), Kuala Lumpur (2), Sabah (2), Perak (1), Labuan (1) and Pahang (1).

Those who died were ranged from a 37-year-old with no history of chronic illness to an 83-year-old with a history of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Three of the deceased had already passed away when brought to the hospital.
