Zahid backed Anwar, drew Umno into personal agenda, says Annuar

Ousted BN secretary-general Annuar Musa today issued a scathing statement against Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, accusing him of using the party for personal interest.
In a statement, he said Zahid had been involved in repeated attempts to threaten the stability of the Perikatan Nasional Plus government which had affected the relationship between Umno, PAS and Bersatu.
These three parties, said Annuar, were the "core" of efforts to unite Malays and Muslims, but Zahid's actions had worked against it.
"Past events have led to anxiety among party members and damaged the party's reputation.
"The party is seen to have been drawn into a personal agenda," said Annuar.
Although Annuar did not make it clear, it was likely that this was a veiled reference to the fact that the present government did not drop corruption charges against Zahid, which was initiated by the previous administration.
'Zahid supported Anwar'
Annuar alleged that Zahid had, in "black and white", supported PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's bid to topple the PN Plus government.
He also accused Zahid of consorting with the DAP in a bid to form a "Jajaran Baru Politik" (new political alignment).
Zahid, noted Annuar, had also repeatedly called for Parliament to be dissolved to pave the way for fresh elections at a time when the public was suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic and an economic downturn.
Internally, Annuar accused Zahid of causing disharmony in the party, leading to open disagreements and Muafakat Nasional's loss of direction.
But most importantly, Annuar accused Zahid of disrespecting party's decision to not work with the DAP and Anwar, and provide "en bloc" support for the PN government, among others.
"Such difference in position (taken by Zahid and myself) has led to my decision not to collaborate with forces which are not acting in accordance with official decisions undertaken by the Umno supreme council.
"Based on this principle, it is better that I am not part of the direction undertaken by Zahid," he said.
‘I will still back Umno’
Annuar, however, vowed to continue contributing to Umno and the unity of Muslims despite his removal as BN secretary-general.
He also urged Umno members to close ranks and uphold the party's policies and philosophies, while urging BN, PN, Muafakat, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah to ensure unity.
"To PAS leaders, I hope you will continue to be magnanimous and not give up on Muafakat.
"To Bersatu leaders, understand the sensitivities of Umno grassroots and take steps to strengthen Malay unity," he said.
Annuar was unceremoniously removed as BN secretary-general yesterday. Both MCA and MIC claimed that they were not consulted on the move, which was a requirement under the BN charter.
