CORONAVIRUS | An unemployed man took advantage of the quiet streets with the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) by the government to curb the spread of Covid-19 to commit robbery at a convenience store, but he could not escape the law as he was then caught.
Mohd Noor Marhan Mat, 40, was charged with the offence in the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today, where he pleaded guilty before judge Izralizam Sanusi.
He was charged with robbing a Bangladeshi man, Sabuj Md, 34, when armed with a knife at the KK Mart convenience store in Jalan Pahang at 4.30 petang on March 22.
The charge, under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same law, provides an imprisonment for up to 14 years, and is liable to fine of whipping, upon conviction.
The court set May 5 for sentencing and to hear the facts of the case.
Meanwhile, at the Magistrate’s Court here, an Indonesian cook was sentenced to four weeks’ jail for stealing a handphone.
Magistrate Mohamad Aizat Abdul Rahim handed down the sentence on Nur Henilis Kamaruddin, 47, who pleaded guilty to stealing the telephone, worth RM400, at a cafe at Bayu Tasik 2 Kondominium, Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras here at 10pm last March 15.
The woman was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of arrest, which was last March 16.
