The Sarawak government has proposed that Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution be amended since the interpretation of the phrase the “Federation” still refers to the federation established under the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957.
Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg (photo) said the interpretation should be amended to refer to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“The moment you have amended (Article) 160 (2) (of the Federal Constitution), this would give force to MA63 and the contents of the constitution,” he told reporters after attending a state-level seminar on fatwa (ruling) in Kuching today.
He was commenting on the willingness of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to hold meetings with parties from Sabah and Sarawak to discuss issues related to MA63 and amendments to Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution.
Abang Johari said the state government would give its full support if the federal government was planning to re-table the amendment to Article 1 (2) of the Federal Constitution in the Dewan Rakyat.
"Previous discussions with the former prime minister (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) will also be continued with Muhyiddin and, more importantly, we want to conclude this matter," he said. — Bernama
