CORONAVIRUS | Medical staff in China's Wuhan are sparing no efforts to fight against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), with many infected doctors returning to their positions right after recovery.
Zhao Zhigang (above) is a doctor at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University who returned to work recently after he had recovered from Covid-19.
The 40-year-old man was infected by the virus in his hospital on Jan 22, and he recovered in 14 days after medical treatment.
Given that his symptoms were mild and the city was in a severe shortage of hospital beds, Zhao was quarantined at home during his recovery period.
But Zhao said he felt like working for patients even when he was resting at home.
"The workload of doctors and nurses at that time was extremely high. So I felt very guilty to stay at home and rest. I started giving online consultation services soon after the hospital established the platform. I gave medical advice to people asking questions online," said Zhao.
Zhao served hundreds of people including many Covid-19 patients online during his quarantine.
"Through the online consultation, I got to know that special groups of people such as pregnant women and children are also infected by the virus. So I reported the cases to our expert team in the hospital, letting them pay special attention to these groups."
Zhao said it is his first instinct to return to work after recovery. He said three colleagues in his department, who were also infected by the virus, did the same.
Tens of thousands of medical workers from across China are now combating the deadly virus which broke out in Wuhan in Dec.
According to reports, nearly 1,700 of medical workers were infected, about 85 percent of whom only have mild symptoms.
