The lawyer acting for Abdul Razak Baginda, who was put on trial for abetting the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaarribuu and was later cleared of wrongdoing, wants contempt proceedings initiated over Azilah Hadri's statutory declaration.

Azilah, who with fellow police special actions unit (UTK) personnel Sirul Azhar Umar were convicted for Altantuya's murder, had today made a statutory declaration (SD) claiming they did so on former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's instructions.

"The matter concerns and impacts an ongoing Shah Alam High Court civil suit and is in the circumstances sub judice," said lawyer Manjeet Singh Dhillon.

"The attorney-general who is involved in the civil suit should immediately take steps and institute contempt proceedings against all and everyone who is coming out with these statements and prejudicing that trial."

Manjeet is representing Abdul Razak (photo) in the suit brought against Altantuya's family against him.

The family is also suing the government over Altantuya's death.

Altantuya was murdered in October 2006 and her remains blown up with military-grade explosives.

Abdul Razak, an associate of Najib, was acquitted of abetting in her murder.

Azilah and Sirul were found guilty and sentenced to death in April 2009.

The Court of Appeal overturned their conviction in August 2013 but the guilty verdict was reinstated by the Federal Court in January 2015.

However, prior to the Federal Court reversing the Court of Appeal's decision, Sirul had fled to Australia and is now in an immigration detention centre there.

He cannot be deported due to Australia's stance against the death penalty.

With the SD, Azilah is now applying to the Federal Court for a review of the court's decision which found him guilty of murder.

Manjeet, who spoke on behalf of Abdul Razak, reserved comment as he had yet to see the details of the application.

"We have yet to see any review application and will comment further on it when we have it in hand and know precisely what is being sought and why," he said.
