A day after media reported that National Film Development Corporation (Finas) would suggest to the government to regulate Netflix, its CEO Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri took to Twitter to explain his statement.
He tweeted that he was merely suggesting a collaboration between Finas and National Council of Women's Organisations to organise a forum or seminar to address the explicit content in the context of strengthening the digital content in the future.
His suggested this at the 'Keluarga Sejahtera 2019' forum at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia yesterday.
"I said I took note of complaints by parents who raised the issue of uncensored (digital) content... Finas will find ways to strengthen local content so they will create a positive impact to the society and country," the tweets read.
Ahmad Idham reiterated that Finas has no prerogative to censor digital content.
His statement yesterday calling for censorship on Netflix content has received backlash from netizens with many saying that there's no need for censorship as there's already a parental control setting within the application.
Yesterday, Harian Metro reported Ahmad Idham as saying that the matter must be highlighted because the uncensored content could bring a negative influence on the next generation.
"Although Finas doesn't have the prerogative for censorship, we are looking at the matter seriously.
"We have taken the approach to control the local content but those that come from abroad are open (uncensored).
"The uncensored content is risky to the child development," said the former actor and director.
Ahmad Idham is not alone in raising the issues on Netflix.
In March this year, Kuala Kangsar MP Mastura Mohd Yazid raised a concern about sex scenes and LGBT representation on Netflix.
"This is about films on Netflix. Are there different mechanisms between those ordinarily used to censor films and those on Netflix?
"Because I am seeing widespread sex scenes and LGBT elements which are causing worry among the people," she told the Dewan Rakyat.
