Several amendments to Bersatu’s constitution, including a clause to enable the party to postpone internal elections, will reportedly be proposed at an upcoming extraordinary general meeting.

If approved by delegates, the proposal would give Bersatu's supreme council the right to postpone elections at all levels, reported The Malaysian Insight.

The proposal states that the postponement of party elections should not be for more than 18 months from the original election date.

Another key amendment which is expected to be proposed is for branch-level elections to be held every two years, instead of the three at present.

This is to encourage ground-level leaders to work harder, according to Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, a member of Bersatu's constitutional amendment committee.

Prospective candidates must also be party members for at least a year before polling, or hold a position at the district, state or national level.

TMI also reported that members who are aiming to contest the party's top posts of chairperson, president, and deputy president must have been a member for three years, and have been a supreme council member or division chief for one term.

Meanwhile, for national-level posts, the requirement is that the candidates must have been a member for at least a year.

They must also have held posts at the division level, been a member of the supreme council or held a state leadership position.

The EGM is slated to take place in Serdang on Saturday.
