DAP leaders have hit out at PAS over the latter's continued resistance to declaring their assets.

DAP central executive committee member P Ramasamy (photo, above) took particular issue with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's remarks yesterday that declaring assets was a communist socialist idea pushed by DAP.

"I don’t understand how a simple and innocuous requirement can become socialist or communist in nature.

"If the DAP or any other party is calling for the distribution of assets or levelling to close the wealth gap, then this could be interpreted as socialist in nature," Ramasamy said in a statement today.

On Monday, the Dewan Rakyat approved a special motion without objections which will compel all lawmakers to declare their assets.

However, after the vote opposition MPs, including those from PAS, came out to condemn the motion.

Ramasamy said Hadi's remarks demonising DAP over the matter was just an effort to conceal alleged corruption among PAS leaders.

"A number of PAS leaders has been accused of corruption in the past in general and specifically for receiving money from Umno.

"Some of its leaders were alleged to lead ostentatious lifestyle, owning properties and expensive cars," he said.

Earlier in February, sources claimed that MACC seized several vehicles and froze the bank accounts of certain PAS leaders. PAS denied this occurred.

PAS has also been accused of taking funds from Umno for political operations. PAS central committee member Nik Abduh Nik Aziz was recorded on tape admitting this.

Besides Hadi, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also objected to asset declarations citing among others, that it put lawmakers and their families at risk.

DAP central executive committee member Ronnie Liu questioned why Tuan Ibrahim had made such a remark.

"So, what exactly is he implying? That PAS politicians are so rich that they would be at risk if anyone knew how rich they were? If that is the case, I wonder how they became so rich," Liu said.
