PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is puzzled that some Pakatan Harapan figures are disputing Latheefa Koya's appointment as the new MACC chief commissioner.
Hadi told reporters in Kuala Terengganu last night that the appointment was the sole prerogative of the prime minister.
"What is important is for (Latheefa) to prove her ability to fulfil her responsibilities," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
On PAS' official position on the matter, Hadi referred to the statement by party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan last week.
Takiyuddin said that the party backed Latheefa's appointment and urged her to perform her duties without fear or favour.
"PAS is confident that Latheefa is qualified and has the apt character to hold the post, especially since she is no longer with a political party.
"She, however, has to prove clearly that she can do the job without fear or favour, to wage war against corruption at all levels.
"PAS wishes her well for her to conduct her duties with the fullest integrity," he said.
Latheefa's appointment has prompted criticism because she was formerly a PKR office-bearer, and because Harapan's manifesto promised to refer all major appointments through Parliament.
However, legally, there is no obligation yet to refer such matters to Parliament.
At least two PKR lawmakers have supported petitions seeking Latheefa's resignation, while PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said Mahathir owed the public an explanation.
