The 27 sen per litre drop in price for RON95 fuel has left MCA president Wee Ka Siong, who accused the federal government of secretly collecting a 30 sen fuel tax, feeling vindicated.

"Earlier today, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said RON95 fuel prices are down 27 per litre, but this includes increasing the (petrol dealers') margin by 2.81 sen.

"This means that the petrol tax quietly collected by Pakatan Harapan is 29.81 sen per litre or almost 30 sen (as alleged by me) and claimed to be a lie by Lim," Wee wrote on his Facebook page this evening.

Yesterday, Lim had rubbished Wee's claims on grounds that Putrajaya had to fork out RM4.89 billion in fuel subsidies during the first 11 months of 2018.

The new RON95 price will take effect at midnight tonight under a re-implemented weekly managed float pricing scheme.

The Harapan government had capped the RON95 price per litre at RM2.20 since the May 9 elections.

Wee said the real reason why petrol prices went down was due to protests by opposition members followed by the same from a former PKR MP.

"All of us said petrol prices should be around RM1.90 per litre [...] we should go for a 30 sen (reduction) and it actually happened. That can't be a coincidence," said Wee, in backing his claim that there was a hidden fuel tax.

"I hope Lim will be more honest in the future [...] stop trying to fool the people like what you did with your manifesto for the last election," said Wee.
