Elected MPs who were absent during the oath-taking ceremony last Monday may face the possibility of disqualification, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said today.

“Elected MPs who were not sworn in on Monday may be disqualified within six months from July 16 if they fail to take their oath as provided under Article 59 of the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today.

He said this with regard to Sipitang MP Yamani Hafez Musa who failed to turn up at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

However, with regard to Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Pagoh MP, Liew said he had received a notice stating that Muhyiddin was currently on medical leave for one month, and the Dewan would make another arrangement for him to be sworn in later.

“As for Sipitang, we did not receive any notification by way of a letter on why he was not able to turn up on Monday for the swearing in,” he said.

Last Monday, a total of 220 of the 222 MPs took their oath of office in the Dewan Rakyat at the first day´s sitting of the first meeting of the first session of the 14th Parliament.

The two absent MPs were Muhyiddin and Yamani Hafez.
