Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) is introducing an affordable 30 megabits per second (Mbps) unifi plan at RM79 per month for the B40 (bottom 40) household income segment.
The company is also introducing three upgrade plans for existing customers with up to 10 times the current speed.
Acting Group CEO Bazlan Osman said the new plans were in line with the government's aspiration to provide cheaper broadband at higher speed.
"In moving towards a digital and creative-led economy, it is imperative that Malaysia scales up to higher broadband speeds to enable the endless possibilities that technology and digital lifestyle can bring," he told reporters at the official unveiling of the new plans in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said the 30Mbps plan is a broadband-only plan for households with income of less than RM4,500 per month, representing a 56 percent reduction to the current plans with the same speed.
Bazlan said the existing unifi customers would be upgraded in phases, beginning Aug 15, to up to 10 times the current speed at the same monthly subscription.
He said customers of pre-unifi, formerly known as Streamyx, in unifi coverage areas would be upgraded to unifi or double the speed in non-coverage areas.
He added that the new high-speed broadband plans would put Malaysia in the second spot in Asean, after Singapore, in terms of bandwidth speed.
Meanwhile, he said new broadband plans for the small and medium enterprises would also be introduced in the coming months.
Currently, there are about 800,000 home unifi customers and 690,000 Streamyx customers, out of which 350,000 Streamyx customers reside in unifi coverage areas.
