The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today clarified that the trial dates for the criminal breach of trust and abuse of power cases against former premier Najib Abdul Razak have not been fixed as reported by some media yesterday.
In a statement, the chambers said the High Court had only indicated, based on the calendar of the judge, what dates were free for the trial.
"The High Court made it clear that the dates would only be fixed after the case is next mentioned in court on Aug 8.
"Trial dates for complex and document-heavy white collar crimes are rarely fixed on the date of charge which represents the first appearance by the parties in court and the prosecution is not expected to serve documents on that day also," read the statement.
The AGC added that the relevant documents will only be served on the defence before the commencement of the trial.
"The prosecution team intends to apply to the High Court on Aug 8 for trial dates to be fixed in November this year."
The chambers also stressed that the gag order issued on the case was only interim in nature and the prosecution intends to oppose it.
"A formal written application by the defence, supported by affidavits stating the exact nature and extent of the gag order is fixed for hearing on Aug 8. The prosecution team will oppose that application," said the chambers.
