Gopeng MP Dr Lee Boon Chye today confirmed that he has accepted the offer to serve as deputy health minister after a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Lee had initially told the press that he had turned down the job when it was offered to him by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. At the time, Lee said he wanted to be just an MP and continue practising as a cardiologist.
In a statement today, Lee said despite him having turned down the offer, he still received a call yesterday informing him that he will be sworn in as deputy minister on July 2.
"After discussing (the matter) with my family and the party leaders, including the PKR president who is also the deputy prime minister, I humbly accepted the appointment.
"I am prepared to dedicate myself full time to supporting the cabinet and the Health Ministry to improve the healthcare system," he said.
In view of this, Lee offered his apology to the public over the confusion that was caused. He also expressed his appreciation to Mahathir, Wan Azizah and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for their trust and support.
Mahathir is expected to announce his full cabinet, comprising of 28 ministers, soon.
