The long-awaited meeting between Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and China's tech giant Alibaba executive chairperson Jack Ma will finally take place tomorrow.
Sources within the Prime Minister's Office confirmed with Malaysiakini that Mahathir will receive Ma at his office in Putrajaya at 9am tomorrow.
Several Chinese newspapers previously reported that Ma had sought a meeting with Mahathir early this month but the prime minister had wanted to first focus on organising the new Pakatan Harapan government.
The previous BN government, under the leadership of then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, had brought Ma onboard as the government's adviser on the digital economy.
Alibaba also has an interest in the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ), touted as a major infrastructure project aimed at spurring e-commerce in the country.
The new government, under the leadership of Mahathir, has reviewed and postponed various mega projects initiated by the previous government.
However, the prime minister had described the DFTZ as a "good idea" and that it will continue.
After the 9am meeting with Mahathir tomorrow, Ma is also expected to officiate Alibaba's country office in Bangsar South.
It will also serve as Alibaba's first Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) outside of China.
