Gov’t urged to reveal truth on Double Six Tragedy

The government has been urged to reveal the truth behind the Double Six Tragedy where former Sabah chief minister Fuad Stephens and 10 others on board an Australian-made GAF Nomad airplane were killed when it crashed in 1976.

Assistant minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, Jimmy Wong said the people want to know the truth about the incident which occurred on June 6, 1976 at Sembulan.

”Most people are still talking about the plane crash and need (want) to know the truth,” he told reporters after a ceremony in commemorating the tragedy at the Double Six Monument in Sembulan, Kota Kinabalu today.

The monument is a dedication to the deaths of eminent Sabah state leaders and passengers killed in the plane crash.

The plane was bound for Kota Kinabalu from Labuan when it crashed in Sembulan, killing all passengers on board.

Recently, an NGO had requested that details of the plane crash investigation findings which were completed on Oct 28, 1976, be disclosed to the public.

Earlier, the ceremony began with a minute’s silence and contemplation, followed by the laying of wreaths led by Wong and the family members of those killed.

Fuad's widow, Rahimah Stephens was also present.

Meanwhile, Wong said the monument should became a major tourism attraction to enable visitors to get information on the tragedy.

“I hope every visitor comes here to pay their respects to our hero,” he added.
