Dr M sworn in as PM
Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad was sworn in as the country's seventh prime minister, following the coalition's triumph over BN on Wednesday.
Speaking to a press conference after his swearing-in ceremony, Mahathir said his first order of business today will be discussing the new government's cabinet line-up
PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim watched the live streaming of Mahathir's swearing-in at the Istana Negara, from his ward in the Cheras rehabilitation centre.
Earlier, Istana Negara, in a statement said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, is looking forward to working with Mahathir and his new government.
In a press conference in the afternoon, Mahathir said that the new government will work on securing a royal pardon for Anwar, so that he can take over the mantle of the prime minister.
Ousted Najib congratulates Mahathir
In a tweet, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak congratulated Mahathir over the victory, and that he is willing to assist with a smooth transition of government.
Earlier in the morning, however, Najib refused to concede defeat, saying no party had won enough seats to form a federal government, and left it for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide who will be the prime minister.
Najib also said that the results of the election, which favoured Harapan, showed that there was no cheating by BN, contrary to allegations that suggested otherwise.
Liow Tiong Lai and Mah Siew Keong, the presidents of BN component parties MCA and Gerakan, accepted the people's decision in the election, and promised to look into solutions following their wipeout.
MIC treasury-general S Vell Paari also congratulated Mahathir and told Harapan to "heal the nation" which had been divided by partisan politics.
Other Kinibites
CIMB chairperson Nazir Abdul Razak, who is Najib's brother, said he looks forward to the Harapan government reviewing the country's deals with China.
DAP's Liew Chin Tong, who lost his Ayer Hitam seat to MCA No 2 Wee Ka Siong, said he will continue as Harapan's strategist.
Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow announced that he will retire from politics after the polls defeat.
Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg congratulated Harapan for winning the election, but said his government will closely monitor the federal government to see if it keeps up to its promises.
BN strategic communication department director Abdul Rahman Dahlan urged BN members and supporters to remain strong, in order to be an "effective opposition".
Looking ahead
PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali will be swearing in as the Selangor menteri besar today afternoon.
The Pakatan Harapan presidential council is expected to convene to discuss the federal government's cabinet line-up.
