Following the change of government after yesterday’s 14th general election, attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali issued a statement declaring that the AG’s Chambers is apolitical.
"We are the legal advisers to the government of the day and at the same time, we are the prosecutor of criminal offences as determined by the law," Apandi said in his brief statement.
"We shall continue to ensure the rule of law without fear or favour," he added.
Apandi further reminded the people that the Attorney-General’s Chambers has a motto, "We shall strive to uphold the law", and that this would be done at all times, irrespective of the political scenario.
The present AG was a former Federal Court judge and was appointed to the post by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to replace Abdul Gani Patail, who was removed the same month as then deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was replaced.
His contract was recently renewed by the government until 2021.
