An aide to the incumbent transport minister Liow Tiong Lai lodged a police report today over a Facebook Live post purportedly showing Pakatan Harapan supporters repeatedly demanding that he show his MyKad while calling him a liar.
The live video footage was taken by Harapan supporters outside the nomination centre for the Bentong seat and was uploaded onto Harapan Bentong candidate Wong Tack's Facebook page during nomination day earlier today.
It was reported that Harapan candidates were actually demanding for BN's candidate for the Ketari state seat, Lau Hoi Keong, to show his MyKad.
This came as they suspected Lau, who is also Federal Territories Gerakan chief, had not changed the address on his MyKad thus disqualifying him from contesting in the 14th general election on May 9.
However, the crowd outside the nomination centre thought the supporters were heckling Liow, BN's Bentong candidate, as seen in the live streaming.
In a statement, Liow's press secretary Lim Chau Leng held Wong and his comrades responsible for creating the false impression.
"This is an extremely regrettable method to gain cheap propaganda. Wong Tack should apologise to Liow Tiong Lai for this lie," he said.
“Loud voices shouting 'Liow Tiong Lai, show your IC' and 'penipu' (liar) could be heard in the video clip,” said Lim.
"This portrayal caused Liow to be misunderstood by many netizens who thought he did not bring his IC to the nomination centre," he said.
"Wong Tack and his team who carried out the Facebook live streaming must take full responsibility for their misrepresentation of Liow," he said, adding Liow had submitted all the documents needed, including his MyKad to the returning officer.
"Therefore, Liow's IC posed no problems. In fact, the entire incident has nothing to do at all with Liow Tiong Lai. The opposition kicked up a fuss about the IC of another candidate," he said.
"Wong rashly broadcasted the video on his Facebook, without investigating the entire incident, and deliberately shouted accusations which caused the conversations to be misunderstood," said Lim.
He urged Bentong voters to reject Wong and make the town a clean and healthy environment.
In 2013, Liow defeated Wong by a razor-thin majority of 379.
Liow is being challenged by Wong and PAS' candidate N Balasubramaniam for the coming polls.
