Reports: Parliament could be dissolved as early as late March

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will likely dissolve Parliament between late March and early April, reported Berita Harian and the New Straits Times.

Citing sources, the reports said this was because the motion on the redrawing of electoral boundaries will likely be tabled between March 19 and March 26.

The motion was initially scheduled to be tabled on March 29, but was brought forward as BN's preparations for the next general election "had entered its final leg."

The reports said Najib will likely table the motion himself for first reading.

Critics have claimed that the redrawing of electoral boundaries were specifically designed to give BN an advantage.

It was also pointed out that many objectors to the Election Commission's proposed boundaries have yet to have their objections heard.

Calling for polls soon will also pose a major challenge for Bersatu, which is presently arguing their case against deregistration efforts by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

The motion on the redrawing of boundaries can be passed by a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat, and can be immediately brought to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for royal assent.

EC chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the new boundaries will be in force immediately once the matter receives royal assent and is gazetted.
