The Terengganu government is holding a course for transgenders in the state with the hope of bringing them back to the right path.
State Communications, Multimedia and Special Functions Committee chairperson Ghazali Taib said a census would be conducted beginning next month to determine their population.
“It will be conducted with the cooperation of the Village Development and Security Committee, police and the State Islamic religious and Malay Customs Council,” he told Bernama after presenting school aid under the "Back to School" programme in Hulu Terengganu today which was jointly organised by the Federation of Peninsula Malay Students (GPMS).
Also present was Terengganu GPMS president Tengku Haphiz Tengku Putera and Hulu Terengganu Education officer Jalaluddin Ismail.
Ghazali, who is also Ajil assemblyperson, said the course would be held as part of the efforts to address "problems" of transgenders.
He said this followed a media report which claimed an area at Flat Petani, in the outskirts of Kuala Terengganu, has become a popular haunt for the trans community.
