Right-wing group Perkasa has called for a new law for detention without trial to deal with what it claimed was a growing number of graft cases in the country.

"Even before action can be taken and punishment meted out (against other cases), it has now been exposed that there was an abuse of power with regard to Felda's land worth millions of ringgit along Jalan Semarak in Kuala Lumpur," said Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali.

He likened the allegedly fraudulent transaction of Felda's land to a private developer to an act of economic sabotage, and called for a National Economic Sabotage Act to deal with such incidences.

"Under the Act, those who are suspected of sabotaging the national economy can be arrested for 30 days without the need for a court order," Ibrahim said.

Claiming that investigations would take too long under current law, he drew parallel the proposal to the now defunct Internal Security Act 1960, under which he was once detained.

Ibrahim added that under his proposed act, those found guilty should be punished with mandatory whipping, at least 10 years’ imprisonment and a seizure of their assets.

"The issue of Felda's land should encourage the people to pressure the government to seek out a mechanism that can more effectively combat corruption and abuse of power," he said.

Last Thursday, Berita Harian in a frontpage report claimed that Felda was at risk of losing its rights to a prime land valued at around RM270 million along Jalan Semarak.

It said this was due to an ownership transfer through an allegedly dubious transaction in 2015.
