Jailed Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim underwent a successful surgery on his right shoulder today.
The procedure took place at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital this morning and was completed by 1.30PM.
In a statement tonight, Anwar's family said he was fully conscious now, but still in pain.
Anwar’s shoulder injury was originally due to an accident in 2014 in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.
The pain was originally managed through exercise and physiotherapy, but prison conditions had made it difficult for the opposition leader to keep up with his regime.
Anwar’s five-year prison sentence on charges of sodomy started in Feb 2015. He has maintained his innocence and claimed that the charges were politically motivated.
The family had said that since September that year, he began to complain that his condition is worsening.
Anwar's condition deteriorated following an accident on Sept 22, when the prison transport ferrying him from Kuala Lumpur Hospital back to prison was rammed into by an escort vehicle following behind it.
