BUDGET 2018 | Four tolls in Selangor, Kedah and Johor will be abolished effective Jan 1, 2018, announced Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The tolls being abolished are in Batu Tiga, Shah Alam and Sungai Rasau in Selangor; Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah; and the Eastern Dispersal Link, in Johor.
"This is good news for highway users in Selangor, Kedah and Johor," Najib said while tabling the 2018 budget.
Pakatan Harapan had in its shadow budget, pledged to abolish all highway tolls in the country.
Critics of the opposition budget, such as MIC treasurer-general S Vell Paari, said the proposal did not make sense and was just a "lie" to woo the rakyat.
The House cheered at the announcement, with shouts of "Hidup BN" (Long live BN) and "Alhamdulillah" ringing in the hall, even from across the floor.
BN had in its 2013 manifesto also promised to abolish tolls but the details were unclear due to a bungled translation.
BN's Bahasa Malaysia version of its manifesto said the coalition planned to gradually reduce "inter-city" tolls but its English version had said intra-city tolls.
Nonetheless, the abolition of the tolls, regardless whether inter-city or intra-city, are expected to bring cheers for road users.
