Tian Chua's message from prison

PKR vice president Tian Chua, in a message from Kajang prison, told his friends and supporters that his incarceration was nothing to be sad about, and urged them to fight on.

"This is a process of struggle we have to go through in order to bring change in our corrupted political system.

"There is nothing to lament about, neither should we be sad. Continue the struggle, freedom will come for the whole nation," he said in a note circulated to activists and party members.

Amongst those who had shared the message was Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah (photo).

Tian Chua had on Sept 29 retracted his appeal at the Kuala Lumpur High Court against his conviction by the Sessions Court for refusing to comply with police orders.

He was said to have done so at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Kuala Lumpur, which acted as a detention centre during the Berish 3 rally in 2012.

The retraction meant that he had to serve the one-month jail sentence meted out by the Sessions Court.

Tian Chua had said his withdrawal was not an admission of guilt, and that he was prepared to pay the price if changing a "repressive and corrupt system" meant that he had to go to jail.

In his latest note, Tian Chua also thanked people for their support and concern.

"I wish to reassure all of you that I am fine and in good spirits," he said.

In the note, Tian Chua signed off with the prison number "60000065."

Meanwhile, China Press, quoting another of Tian Chua's lawyers N Surendran (photo), said the Batu MP is expected to be released on Oct 27.

He added that Tian Chua planned to attend Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's tabling of the budget, which is scheduled to take place on the day of his release.

Tian Chua was not disqualified as MP, as the sentence did not meet the threshold of a year's imprisonment, or an RM2,000 fine.
