Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has announced next Monday (September 4) as a public holiday following the country's success in the SEA Games.
Najib announced this during the closing ceremony of the 29th SEA Games at Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur tonight.
"Tonight, in appreciation of the sacrifices by our national athletes and all quarters in raising the country's image and spurring national excellence, as well as the unparallel support from all Malaysians in the 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017, I am pleased to announce that Sept 4 will be a nationwide public holiday," he said.
At the close of the games, Malaysia finished on top with 145 gold medals followed by Thailand with 72 and Vietnam with 58.
In total, Malaysia won 323 medals, 92 of which were silver and 86 were bronze.
The announcement meant that the holidays will commence tomorrow until Monday.
Malaysians are already celebrating Merdeka Day tomorrow and the following day is also a public holiday, namely Hari Raya Aidiladha. This is then followed by the weekend.
