Teacher's Day celebration at SK Othman Talib 1, Tendong near Pasir Mas took a tragic turn after a teacher died, possibly due to a heart attack.
Naizura Mohamed, 42, collapsed on stage while performing the dikir barat with her students at about 12pm and was rushed to the local health clinic.
The incident was witnessed by about 700 teachers, students and school support staff members, Bernama reported.
Emergency medical assistance was provided to Naizura but she died 30 minutes after, headmaster Zulhadi Mahamad said.
She served the school for 12 years and has been treated for heart complications at the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian, he said.
Her husband, Kamarul Azhar Ahmad, 44, said she underwent bypass surgery in 2009 but did not face health problems after that.
"I can't believe she is gone on a day where all teachers are celebrated," said Kamarul, who teaches at Sekolah Kebangsaan Gelang Mas.
They have four children aged 12 to 21.
Kamarul Azhar said Naizura started the day on an excited note due to Teacher's Day celebrations.
Zulhadi said her colleagues advised her to rest when she appeared fatigued, but she insisted on performing with her students.
The Kampong Alor Durian native taught Bahasa Malaysia, and was laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery at Kampung Perangkap near Pasir Mas at 6pm today.
