PAS says preparing witnesses in UK against S'wak Report

PAS claims to have prepared as many as 10 witnesses to give their statements in the United Kingdom in the Islamist party's case against whistleblower site Sarawak Report.

The party said it is also preparing to gather witnesses in Malaysia to give statements in court on the case, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said.

"For now, we are listing the witnesses comprising Malaysian and UK citizens to help give their statements.

"In court, these witnesses are sometimes called to give their statements in the written form, affidavit and other ways," Takiyuddin (photo) is reported as saying by Sinar Harian today.

PAS threatened to sue Sarawak Report on its claim that the party had received RM90 million from Umno as part of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's bid to attract PAS to work with Umno.

The Islamist party has sent a letter of demand to Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown in December last year, giving her a seven-day ultimatum to apologise, retract and promise not to publish the accusations again.

However, until now, Rewcastle-Brown said, PAS has yet to file the lawsuit against her.

Takiyuddin said they have a six-year statute of limitations to file a lawsuit on this issue.

"I ask that those urging PAS to take legal action not to worry because we stand by our decision to do so.

"When the (lawsuit) is filed, it is up to the lawyer," he said.

Their lawyers are currently looking into the effects and impact of the defamation suit the party intends to file, he said.

PAS has discussed this issue in every PAS central meeting, Takiyuddin said, pointing out that the party had expressed their desire to sue Sarawak Report since last December.

"In mid-December last year, we already said we want to sue the relevant parties.

"But when it will be done is not clear yet as there are many preparations to be done, such as documentation, witnesses and so on, because we have to prove this case to the court," he said.
