Umno information chief Annuar Musa would do better to help Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) students with his RM50,000 than offering it for people to write essays on whether DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang was racist.
This is according to PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who noted that Annuar is the pro-chancellor of UniKL which has been facing financial challenges.
Rafizi pointed out that UniKL recently aborted an attempt to raise hostel fees after complaints from students and some staff were let go due to financial constraints.
"In such a situation, it would be highly irresponsible for Annuar, as the UniKL pro-chancellor, to be playing politics and offering a RM50,000 prize to belittle his political enemy, Lim Kit Siang," he said.
Yesterday, Annuar offered RM10,000 to the best essay discussing on whether Lim was racist.
DAP member Zaid Ibrahim immediately countered with a RM10,000 offer for essays on whether Najib Abdul Razak was the worst prime minister.
Subsequently, Annuar earlier today increased his offer to RM50,000.
Rafizi also reminded Annuar, who was suspended as Mara chairperson but was still drawing salary, that many bumiputera students from low-income families were not able to gain full scholarship from Mara.
"Therefore, I advise Annuar to focus on his original responsibility by taking care of the welfare of students under institutions in which he oversees.
"I also advise that he announce the RM50,000 prize to be converted into scholarships for top-performing needy students at UniKL," he said.
Rafizi also suggested that the opposition do not entertain Annuar's stunt anymore.
He stressed that there were pressing issues such as the economic burdens faced by the people rather than politicking.
