Former Tambun member of parliament Yahaya Shafie, 83, died of old age at home in Jalan Raja Dihilir in Ipoh today.

Yahaya died at 1.27pm in the presence of family members. He leaves a wife and 11 children.

His son, Al Yashri, 28, said his father was admitted to hospital for treatment two weeks ago after a fall at home.

"However, his condition became worse. Doctors said he had a lung infection," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Al Yashri, who is also Perak Umno Youth exco member, said his father's remains will be buried at the Muslim cemetery in Jalan Bendahara after Asar prayers.

Yahaya served as Tambun MP from 1986 to 1990 and was Ipoh Timur Umno division chief from 1981 to 2000.

He was also chairperson of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in the 1980s.
