A boy lost his penis in a botched circumcision using the laser technique in a clinic in Kajang, police confirm.
A video of the incident went viral on the internet today, Bernama reported.
Kajang district police officer ACP Othman Nanyan said several witnesses have been called in for investigation, the newswire reported.
The case is being investigated under Section 388 of the Penal Code for causing grievous injury due to negligence.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years or RM2,000 or both.
In Malaysia, Muslim boys are usually circumcised while in primary school in what is seen as a rite of passage.
The ceremonies are often held during school holidays, which are now ongoing, to give the boys time to recuperate.
Traditionally done using a blade, medical advances have seen most circumcision done in clinics under anaesthesia, with many opting for the laser technique.
