PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli is expecting the price for RON95 petrol to increase to RM2.20 per litre in January 2017.

Based on this, the Pandan MP urged Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan to state if the expected increase in income from crude oil would be used for petrol subsidies next year.

He said as global crude oil prices have suddenly soared 18 percent since November, the government is expected to have an increased income as Malaysia is an oil-exporting country.

However, he warned this means petrol prices, specifically RON95, is also expected to witness a sharp increase.

"I urge Rahman Dahlan, as the minister in charge of economic planning, to start doing his job and state clearly whether or not the government will use the unexpected extra income from the increase of crude oil price and return it as fuel subsidy," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Rafizi's calculations were based on a formula that utilised the Mean of Platts Singapore (Mops) oil prices.

At present, RON95 cost RM1.90 per litre.

Meanwhile, Rafizi also responded to Abdul Rahman, who had yesterday said the opposition should stop obsessing over political positions and provide their policies.

"This is our policy,” he said.

"If we (Pakatan Harapan) were in government today, we would have set aside whatever extra income that we get from the unexpected revenue from the increase in crude oil price and make sure that it is returned back cent for cent in the form of fuel subsidy so that we can smooth out the fuel crisis," he added.

Otherwise, the PKR leader said, a sudden 30 cent increase for RON95 per litre at the beginning of the year, when school reopens, would "really make a dent" in a lot of people's pockets.
