Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to embrace the spirit of korban in the people's fight against injustice and kleptocracy,
In his Aidiladha message today, the PKR de facto leader spoke of the relevance today of the sacrifice of Nabi Ibrahim and his son Nabi Ismail in placing the love of God "above self and children".
"This sacrifice in a broader context is our coming together to rise to oppose depravity, nepotism and cronyism, and now there is the latest term, kleptocracy
"This has been my struggle all this time," said Anwar in a joint message with his wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The proof, he said, is Umno that is "fractured today, and all those who are leaving Umno say the party has deviated from its struggle for religion, race and country" and those in power are only concerned with enriching themselves.
Anwar urged the people to "fight evil, persecution and widespread corruption in the country".
He said the rakyat should not remain silent against rulers who are cruel to the people, who oppress them with all kinds of unreasonable taxes such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), who plunder the nation's wealth, and who shame the nation in the international arena, citing the 1MDB scandal.
After all, he said, God commands the faithful to "correct all evil with hand, words, or at least in heart".
Wishing the nation a happy Aidiladha, he reminded all to "live in moderation, and be thrifty in spending".
