A lawyer has described demands for attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali to resign after he was spotted dancing publicly with several ministers as "trivial".

While concurring that the attorney-general needed to appear independent, Wan Azmir Wan Majid said appearing alongside political leaders does not mean Apandi was siding with them.

"The excuses given in demanding that the attorney-general resigns because he was dancing (with ministers in public) is something very trivial," the lawyer us quoted as saying in Sinar Harian today.

"I have seen the US attorney-general appearing on the same stage as (US President) Barack Obama but this does not mean that they have a common interest."

Wan Azmir, who has also acted as lawyer for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, said the attorney-general should be judged by his actions, and not from perception.

"The mentality that overly emphasises on perception is outdated and should be changed," he added.

Wan Azmir said he believed Apandi is a principled and just person.

He was responding to a video which was first highlighted by fellow lawyer Mohd Haniff Khatri Abdulla.

The video showed Apandi dancing with five other ministers during the National Day parade on Aug 31.

Mohd Haniff, who is also lawyer for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had said the attorney-general should not only be independent but appear to be independent, and that Apandi's actions in the video went against this principle.

Former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan subsequently led a protest outside the attorney-general's office in Putrajaya on Monday to demand Apandi's resignation.

Khairuddin today also submitted the video as part of his judicial review application against Apandi's decision to clear Najib over the multi-billion ringgit deposits in his personal bank accounts.

Najib has denied wrongdoing and said he has never taken public funds for personal gain.
