An attack by terror group Islamic State (IS) during Malaysia Day on Sept 16 is a possibility, police have confirmed.

Deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said this was because the group was trying to make its presence felt in the country.

Noor Rashid added that the group had been active in Malaysia lately and increased its activities.

Police, however, have been monitoring the activities of IS since the militant group was formed, assured Noor Rashid.

“The public must have confidence in the police in their capability of handling and monitoring the activities of such groups,” The Star quoted him as saying.

This comes as police foiled possible attacks by three suspected IS militants on the eve of National Day.

The trio had allegedly been planning attacks on entertainment outlets, the Hindu temple at Batu Caves as well as police stations using grenades or firearms.

Noor Rashid, meanwhile, said police were monitoring several individuals who had the potential to create disturbance to public order.

“However, they are under our observation and we have conducted appropriate action against them,” he said.
