Malaysian film 'Pekak' has received two awards at the International Motivational Film Festival in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.

The film, produced by Lightbulb Pictures and distributed by Grand Brilliance, trumped 10 other films from around the world.

'Pekak', directed by Mohd Khairul Azri Md Noor, won the Best Script award while Zahiril Adzim, 32, won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the character Uda.

The film, which opens in Malaysian cinemas today, tells the story of Uda, a drug dealer with hearing disabilities.

Uda chooses to deal in drugs to raise funds to undergo a cochlea implant, which costs tens of thousands of ringgit.

'Pekak' also features actors Sharifah Amani (photo above), Sharifah Sakinah, Amerul Affendi and Iedil Putra.

The second International Motivational Film Festival was held from Aug 24 to 28.

Festival jury members included Aydin Salman, Alessandro Passadore, Mira Gavyarova, Alyona Babenko, Alain Depardieu, Anatoliy Kotenyov and Vladimir Alenikov.

This is the third time 'Pekak' was screened internationally, after the Malaysia Goes to Cannes programme at the Marche du Film 2016 organised by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) and the Creative Content Association Malaysia last May.

It was also screened at the World Premiere Film Festival in the Philippines last year.
