YOURSAY | ‘There is no shame in not winning a gold medal for Malaysia.’

Chong Wei says sorry for not delivering gold at Rio Olympics

SpecialBrew: It’s hard to put into words the agony of defeat and disappointment when the illusive gold is so close yet seems so far.

Nevertheless, you have won three Olympics silver medals in a row. That’s a great achievement, the highest for any Malaysian. No apology is required here.

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well,” said Olympic Games founder Pierre de Coubertin.

Thank you and God bless you, Datuk Lee Chong Wei (DLCW).

Anonymous 1376741456814901: Chong Wei, we will not accept your apology as you do not owe us anything.

You can be disappointed in yourself for not winning the gold medal since it is something personal to every athlete, but don't feel responsible to deliver the gold medal for Malaysian citizens.

Do your best and win the upcoming World Championship for yourself and not for us.

The Analyser: What is there to be sorry about? If Chong Wei did his best, that's all his country can ask of him.

The problem here is that so many insecure Malaysians are so desperate for a win that they impose their high expectations onto other people. When those people do not come up to expectations, they are deemed to have failed.

There is nothing to be ashamed of in being a silver medallist. More especially so after Chong Wei's long and highly successful career in badminton.

Lone_Star: DLCW, after having campaigned for the Olympic gold for so many years, it means you never have to say you are sorry. The nation has you to thank for a personal collection of three Olympic medals. No other Malaysian has more!

Existential Turd: You played brilliantly. The matches were thrilling to watch. In the end, luck was not on your side, and your opponent was a better player.

Indeed, you earned three silver medals for Malaysia - more than any Malaysian. This is a record that will stay for a long time.

Anonymous 759201436321741: LCW, no apology is needed from you. You are among the greats of badminton. Your record of winning three silvers in three consecutive Olympics spanning over 12 years will take a long, long time to be broken, if it ever happens.

Both China’s Lin Dan and you have made badminton the sport it is today.

Discerning Reader: Yes, there is no shame in not winning a gold medal for Malaysia. We have seen your efforts and the contests can go either way as all top class players are evenly matched.

What matters is that you have played your best from the opening rounds all the way into finals. It is no shame to lose and we are proud of you.

We are very proud of the Malaysians who are part of the Olympic team, irrespective of whether they won any medals or not, for their efforts to qualify to compete against the very best.

What?MeWorry: Chong Wei, just don't go into politics and represent BN - you will lose, again. Be a mentor to those aspiring to win a gold or two for Malaysia.

Quizzed by MACC, Bung Moktar says he is an innocent witness

Odin Tajué: Felcra Berhad chairperson Bung Moktar Radin, you are a witness. You yourself have said you are.

In this case, there is no such thing as an innocent witness yet. A witness is a party to a lawsuit, on the side of the plaintiff or of the defendant. Obviously, you are a witness on the side of the defendant. In fact, it may be that you are the defendant.

If the former applies, you may be considered an accessory, and thus guilty by association and abetment, if the defendant(s) is/are found guilty.

If you are the defendant and are found guilty, then obviously you are a guilty witness. Innocence can only be determined when the trial is completed.

Mushiro: Bung Moktar has given a new meaning to the word “innocent”. Now we have “innocent witness”, “guilty witness”.

However, the seven hours of questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) suggest that Bung is a suspect.

Aktan: Good job, MACC, and do carry on your duties diligently. It’s time to shake the negative image of MACC of the past.

Shake and uproot that tree of corruption! Big and small...
