Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today recorded his condolences to the family of former Singapore president, SR Nathan, who passed away last night.
"My deepest condolences to the family of former Singapore President SR Nathan and the people of Singapore," Najib said in his Twitter account.
Nathan, 92, passed away at Singapore's General Hospital at 9.48pm yesterday, according to the Singapore Prime Minister's Office.
On July 31, the Singapore Prime Minister's Office announced that Nathan suffered a stroke and was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the hospital.
Nathan, who was appointed as Singapore's High Commissioner to Malaysia in 1988, was the longest-serving president in Singapore, and was in office for two terms from 1999 to 2011.
He officially stepped down as the sixth president on Aug 31, 2011, and was succeeded by the current President Tony Tan Keng Yam.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced that a State Funeral Service will be held for Nathan, from 4pm on Aug 26, at the University Cultural Centre.
In a statement, the PMO said it would be attended by Nathan's family, friends and former colleagues, the president, cabinet ministers, members of Parliament, civil servants as well as Singaporeans from all walks of life.
The PMO said the State Funeral Service will be followed by a private cremation at Mandai Crematorium.
The body will lie in state at Parliament House from 10am on Aug 25 to noon on Aug 26.
The statement said members of the public may pay their last respects at Parliament House from 10am to 8pm on Aug 25.
On Aug 26, members of the diplomatic corps and other officials may pay their last respects from 9am till noon.
